GolfLogix iPhone App review

GolfLogix: Golf GPS
GolfLogix iPhone App Review
You may be aware of the company GolfLogix which makes the GolfLogix golf gps devices. Up until recently, the golf gps craze involvedt dedicated gps devices for golf. The devices were only used for golfing and came in many different flavors. With the explosion of sales of the iPhone and iPhone applications, many developers started to create golf GPS apps for the iPhone. The iPhone includes a GPS and 3G data connection which is ideal for creating a golf GPS app. GolfLogix is one of the first golf gps companies to create an iPhone application version.

I downloaded the GolfLogix iPhone app and took the application for a spin for a recent round to give it a try. The GolfLogix app is a “free” application download, however, the Champion membership is free for 24 hrs which allows you to try it out once. After the 24 hr period, you must upgrade to a paid membership to gain access to the champion membership. Otherwise you will stay club member. Not to worry though, most all functionality that you will need is available as a club member! More on the memberships below.

The GolfLogix application has all of the functionality that you need in a golf GPS. The application will select the correct course based upon your current location when starting your round, and the app will also auto-advance to the next hole based upon your location. This is an ease of use feature that some of the other golf GPS units have and is a great feature in my opinion. You can measure the distance of any shot by clicking on the shot measurement button at the spot of your shot, and move to the finish point to read the distance. The greenview is pretty limiting, and basically provides just the distance to the front, center and back of the green. The screen is hard to see, and doesn’t provide much detail in regards to the shape and contour of the green on approach. The app does provide distances to hazards and targets which is beneficial. Once the hole is complete, and you start to move towards the next tee, the application will ask for your score, along with number of putts, chips, sand shots, and penalties.

Membership Levels

Club Member

As a club member, which is free, provides many features that make the application a great download.

  • FREE unlimited use of the 25,000 course scorecards worldwide
  • Full digital scorecard for up to 4 players
  • Aerial image of every hole
  • Track stats like fairways hit, green in regulations, putting and more
  • Your own club member webpage in the GolfLogix clubhouse

Champion Member

For $39.95 per year, you can become a Champion member and receive the following additional benefits and features such as more precise distances to targets and greens and more stats.

Once you are done with your round, you can synch the stats and scores to the GolfLogix website, where you can log in through a PC and view and review all of your stats and rounds.Battery Life

Because the application uses the GPS constantly, the application will drain the battery quite fast. GolfLogix suggests starting with a full battery and changing the backlight brightness to 50% or lower along with turning off auto-brightness. These can be managed through settings->brightness.I started my round with a full battery and followed GolfLogix’s suggestions and was able to barely complete my round when I received the low battery warning from the iPhone (20% battery remaining). It might be wise to buy and use a battery extender.

Other smartphones supported

In addition to the iPhone, GolfLogix can be downloaded to more than a dozen GPS-enabled phones including the BlackBerry Curve™, BlackBerry Bold™, BlackBerry Tour™ and BlackBerry Storm™, Storm 2™, Motorola DROID, HTC Touch Pro™ and more.

Conclusion

I was quite impressed with the GolfLogix golf gps iPhone application. As a free application, it is extremely valuable and can save you a lot of money from purchasing a dedicated golf gps device. If you have an iPhone or one of the other supported devices, I highly recommend downloading the application and giving it a try.

 2010 Golf GPS

Garmin Approach G5 Golf GPS

 Garmin Approach G5 Golf GPS

The Garmin Approach G5 Golf GPS is a color touchscreen model gps unit that features a large screen along with a rugged and waterproof shell.  Since the G5 is mainly a touchscreen, all features are managed through on screen menus.  The unit comes with Garmin’s database of over 14,000 courses preloaded on the device.  Unlike some of the predecessor golf gps units, no monthly or annual subscription is necessary to download courses to the device.  All preloaded courses are free and included with the price of the unit, and any updates can be downloaded from Garmin’s website for free.  The 14,000+ courses provides most everyone the course that they are playing, but some smaller or new courses may not be in the database.

Features that you would expect in a golf GPS unit are available, including distances to and from anywhere on the course, score keeping and shot distance measurements.  Utilizing the touchscreen, just touch and drag the icon on the course layout to provide distance to any point on the hole.

OnPar Golf GPS

 OnPar Golf GPS

The OnPar Golf GPS is similar in size to an iPod Touch or iPhone.  This is golf GPS is one of the newer units on the market.  With any new device, there are problems, and OnPar experienced these problems including buggy software and lack of supported courses.  However, through upgrades and updates, the OnPar Golf GPS has been able to ease reported problems, and the device has become much more useful on the golf course.

The OnPar is a slim profile device, again similar to the iPhone, and uses a touchscreen for all interactions with the device while using it on the golf course.  All needed functionality, such as distance to targets, shot distance are available in addition to hole overviews and detailed green views and information.  Customers will be impressed with the high resolution, bright screen.  The golf course database is free with the purchase of the device, so you will not need to subscribe to a monthly service or need to spend any additional money to load courses.

SkyCaddie SG5 Golf GPS

 SkyCaddie SG5 Golf GPS

The SG5 is the top of the line SkyCaddie golf gps product.  This device includes a large color display and an abundant of features.  However, unlike some of the newer top of the line golf GPS units, the SkyCaddie SG5 does not have a touchscreen.  Distances to holes are displayed in large numerics and the device can hold up to 40 separate targets per hole.

SkyCaddie includes their Intelligreen technology with their devices, which provides distances to the front, center and back of each green.  Unlike some of the lower end golf gps units, the front, center, and back calculations are performed from the location of the gps unit in a straight line to the green.  This provides accurate distances to the green.  SkyCaddie measures the distances for their courses on the ground with specialized equipment instead of using satellite images.  The claim is that the distances are more accurate by using on the ground equipment instead of estimating distances from images.

The SkyCaddie SG5 will require an annual membership for access to the course database.  Prices range from $29.95 to $59.95 per year depending on the access you require from the database.

Sonocaddie V300 Golf GPS

 Sonocaddie V300 Golf GPS

The key feature of the Sonocaddie V300 is the color 3D display.  The Sonocaddie V300 has a large color screen, with hard button keys to interact with the device.  Each hole is displayed in full on the color screen, and your actual position will be tracked in real time.  Targets and hazards are all viewable on the hole layout including distance to the front, back and center of the green, and to water hazards, bunkers, lay-up areas and more.  Other features included in the Sonocaddie V300 are shot distance measurements and tracking, scorecard, game analysis and personalized course mapping.  Each and every shot can be tracked and saved to be reviewed at a later time.

Courses are available for download, but a membership is required.  The device can hold up to 20 courses at one time, and two memberships are available.  Birdie membership is a one time payment of $29.95 and allows 5 free course downloads.  After 5 course downloads, each additional course will cost $5 each.  The eagle membership requires a one time cost of $49.95 and includes an unlimited number of free course downloads.

Callaway uPro golf GPS

 Callaway uPro Golf GPS

Callaway recently bought the uPro line of golf GPS devices.  The uPro is one of the top of the line golf GPS units on the market today and provides functionality unseen in other products.  It contains a color touchscreen including video flyovers of each hole.  As you walk up to the tee box of the next hole, the gps unit will begin to play a video flyover of the hole, including information about yardage lines.  “SmartView” is a feature that shows targets and distances from an aerial view.  AnyPoint technology enables you to measure the distance to any point on the golf course.  Thousands of courses are available for the Callaway uPro including aerial views, satellite images and flyover videos.  The unit only holds one course at a time.

There are two levels of golf course downloads for the Callaway uPro.  Basic course information is downloadable for free and the “Pro Mode” downloads cost $10 per course.  The “Pro Mode” downloads include the video flyovers.  Discounts are available for buying Pro Mode courses in bulk.

Callaway uPro GO Golf GPS

 Callaway uPro GO Golf GPS

The Callaway uPro GO is a cheaper version of the Callaway uPro, and lacks the capability to play video flyovers.  The uPro Go includes 18,000 courses pre-loaded on the device, and requires no annual fees as opposed to the need to download courses with the uPro.  The uPro GO is similar to the uPro in the rest of the features and functions and includes a bright color LCD and easy to navigate menus.

The uPro GO will display virtual greens and dynamically calculates the distance to the front, center and back of the green.  The hazard view dynamically generates and displays distances to hazards including carry distances.

Golf Buddy Pro Golf GPS

 Golf Buddy Golf GPS

The Golf Buddy Pro has some interesting and useful features but lacks some of the “cool” features of the higher end devices with color touchscreens.  The dynamic green view displays an image of the green depending on the angle of approach to provide an accurate display of your shot.  Target information comes preloaded with each golf course and you can add up to 11 personal targets per hole.  The Golf Buddy Pro comes preloaded with all available courses in North America with the ability to add International courses

A nice feature of the device is that it will automatically select and load the golf course for you utilizing the gps location information.  It will also automatically increment to the next hole depending on your location.

The device contains a hi-res black and white screen, and includes the ability to keep track of scoring, driving distance and supports multiple languages.

GolfLogix GPS-8 Golf GPS

 Garmin GolfLogix GPS-8 Golf GPS

The GPS-8 is a simple golf GPS device powered by Garmin.  The device contains more than 22,000 courses preloaded on the device, and will automatically select the course and which hole you are on by your location.

The device provides distance to the front, center and back of the green plus up to six hazards and lay-up distances per hole.  Shot distance measurement can be calculated for each shot and can keep track of each club’s distance.  The GPS-8 is waterproof and made for rugged outdoor use.

Sonocaddie XV2 Golf GPS

 Sonocaddie XV2 Golf GPS

The XV2 is a cheaper golf GPS unit than the Sonocaddie V300 and has a black and white LCD screen.  The screen will display all necessary targets for a hole including the distance to the front and back of the green.  Another screen will zoom in on the green displaying the shape of the green and provide distances to the front, center and back of the green in large numbers.  Personalized targets can be added per hole.  You can also view driving distance and keep score with the scorecard.

The Sonocaddie XV2 can download from over 18,000 available courses for free.

SkyCaddie SG2.5 Golf GPS

 Skycaddie SG2.5 Golf GPS

The SkyCaddie SG2.5 is a cheaper version of the SG5 and does not include the color screen.  The SG2.5 contains a black and white LCD screen but includes many of the features of the SG5.  The Intelligreen Pro software is included which provides accurate distances to the green including contours and tiers depending on your angle of approach.  Other features include scorecard with handicap calculations, shot distance measurement, and dynamic yardages to hazards, and targets (up to 40 per hole).  The SG2.5 requires an annual membership to the online course database which starts at $29.95 per year.

Bushnell Yardage Pro Golf GPS

 Bushnell Yardage Pro Golf GPS

Bushnell entered the golf GPS market and purchased iGolf.  The Bushnell yardage Pro device is a simple device, similar to iGolf’s devices, but provides the necessary information to play a round of golf.  The device provides three screens or modes.  The “Play” mode shows the distances to the front, center and back of the green.  The “Scorecard” mode displays a scorecard including the hole in play, par, handicap and yardage from the tee box.  The “Drive Distance” mode displays the distance of the shot including the current distance to the pin.

The Yardage Pro uses the same golf course database as the iGolf products, which requires an annual membership to download courses costing $34.99 per year.

iGolf Neo Golf GPS

 iGolf Neo Golf GPS

The iGolf Neo is the smallest and cost effective golf GPS device on the market.  This device will easily fit in the palm of your hand or in your pocket.  The device is dead simple and doesn’t contain many fancy features and functions.  Distances to the front, center and back of the green; distance to the pin and last shot distance are provided.  The iGolf Neo can hold up to 10 courses at a time.  Access to the iGolf website is necessary to download courses, which costs $34.99 per year.  The iGolf course database contains 33,500 courses world-wide.  Once a course has been downloaded to your computer, it does not need to be downloaded again, and the synching of the unit to the computer can change the courses loaded on the device.  So, if you download all of the courses you need in the first year, the membership to the iGolf website is not needed anymore.

Accel Golf Review  E-mail

Accel Golf Review

Accel Golf (accelgolf.com) is a new startup company aimed to help golfers improve their golf game. AccelGolf is both a website and set of smart phone applications for golfers. They just recently raised $600K in angel funding and the company was apart of TechStars class of 2009.

The main idea behind Accel Golf is to track every shot of your golf game, and then provide data in the form of statistics and charts to help all golfers understand their game better. By providing accurate data, a golfer can learn about their strengths and weaknesses in order to practice the weaknesses to improve. Most amatuer golfers do not fully understand their weaknesses to get better. For instance, if a golfer 3 putts more than the average golfer, that is an area that needs to be improved upon to lower their golf score.

Accel Golf Accel Golf Accel Golf

Accel Golf has mobile applications for the iPhone, Android, and Blackberry smart phones. The interface to track shots is made as simple as possible, instead of jotting down a score for each hole, a user pushes a button that expresses the lie the last shot was taken on. The current options are Tee (first shot off of tee), Rough, Sand, Fairway, Green, and Penalty. It is a very simple interface, which is nice when using the application out on the course. Just from this simple interface, the application can calculate a tremendous amount of data for a golfer to get a picture of the state of his/her game.

I would like to mention, that Accel Golf is in beta currently, so any issues that I ran into can be fixed before the released version

Using Accel Golf on the course

I recently downloaded the iPhone version of the application to try out this new golf application. I created my account right from the iPhone, and I was ready to start using the application. It was a very easy process to sign up and create an account to begin. I was playing a round at a fairly unknown golf course, and I was suprised that Accel Golf had the course listed. It is important to have the course in the Accel Golf Database of courses, because all of the hole information along with scorecard information is already set up for you. Unlike most of the iPhone golf scorecard applications, which must be setup first by having the user manually enter all of the scorecard information into the application, Accel Golf eliminates this annoying and time consuming step. The application allows more than one person to track with the application in case their are multiple users interested in using the application. The mobile application will download the latest course information from the Internet, so that you know the latest scorecard is correct. When playing another round, the list of recently used courses is presented for easy access to begin a new round. I found selecting a course and setting up the golfers to be quite easy and intuitive

Like most men, I don't read the instructions before using anything new, and I was a little confused on how to progress through each shot. When you click to begin a round, it brings you to a screen that allows you to select the course and golfers like I mentioned previously. This is easy to do. However, it took me a minute to figure out how to begin tracking my shots. There are 5 buttons at the bottom of the iPhone screen which are Settings, Front 9, Back 9, Rangefinder and Finish. I didn't know you had to hit the Front 9 button to begin the round and track shots. Once I figured that out, it brought me to the scorecard screen with a big Tee button. I teed off, and then pressed the only button that was available, called Tee, and it then added 1 to my score for the hole and presented me with the 5 types of lies (Rough, Green, Fairway, Sand, Penalty). Clicking on any of these buttons will increment your score, and present all strokes for that hole in the middle of the screen. After finishing the hole, I ran into another UI problem (at least for me), I didn't know how to end the hole or move on to the next hole. I first click on 'finish', but quickly found out that meant finish the whole round of golf. I didn't want to do that, so I canceled it. It took me a minute to figure out that I had to click on the next hole on the scorecard to move to the next hole. When I click on the next hole, it progressed the application, and again I was presented with the big Tee button. Once I was able to understand the user interface, it became much easier for me to keep track of my shots and progress from hole to hole.

The Accenture Match Play Championship was going on as I was golfing the day I was using the Accel Golf application. This meant that I left the Accel Golf App several times to bring up the PGATour App to see who was winning the match. When I then went back to the Accel Golf application, I ran into some issues once in awhile. The application seemed to have a few issues with displaying current information when I re-entered the application. I was able to correct the problem by existing, and restarting the application when I ran into this problem.

I found tracking each shot quite simple because all I had to do was click one button on each shot. I didn't have to keep track of number of putts, Fairway In Regulation, Green In Regulation, Up and Down, Sand Saves etc...

Once the round was finished, I clicked on Finish, and all of my data was uploaded to my account on the Accel Golf website. Currently, your round data is not stored locally on the phone, so viewing past data is available. You must log onto the website in order to view all of your stats and previous rounds. The iPhone application seems to have the interface to view your statistics, however none of my data is available to me, so I'm not sure if this functionality is just not working yet, or if there is some kind of bug.

Improvements I'd like to see

  • I think having a button to progress to the next hole would make the UI more intuitive. Clicking on the hole on the scorecard is a little difficult to figure out at first, and is a small area to push with your finger. I think having an obvoius button to progress to the next whole would help.
  • Since most of the smart phones have built in GPS, it would be nice to track the distance of each shot played. The application should be able to use the GPS to calculate each shot distance as you press each shot. This would require the golfer to understand that the distance was going to be calculated, so that you would only click the shot button(s) standing right next to your shot to provide accurate distance data

Accel Golf Accel Golf Accel Golf

Conclusion

Accel Golf is a new application that looks to be useful. I think over time as Accel Golf progresses through the beta, the application will be a very nice application to use to track your golf game. The simplicity of recording each shot is excellent and alleviates the cumbersome input that other application require. The amount of statistics and charts that are provided is wonderful. I'm looking forward to using Accel Golf this year!

Amazon

Amazon has the lowest price we've seen on the Leupold GX-I Golf Rangefinder. Rangefinders are very accurate for determining distance because they use a laser to determine the distance to objects (such as the flag). This is different than a GPS unit, which uses satellites to determine the distance, and GPS units have an inherent error (~ 3 feet) due to the way GPS works.

- A great Valentines gift is a golf trunk. This trunk fits in the trunk of your car, and allows you to store all of your golf related items in a neat a safe manner

Lost Golf Galls

Does your valentine need some golf balls for the upcoming golf season? LostGolfBalls.com has 2010 golf balls now. This is a great way to buy premium balls at a big discount. LostGolfBalls.com sells used/recycled golf balls. They clean the golf balls, and provide a rating to them. The highest quality rating delivers a golf ball that is very close to new.

Bridgestone B330-RX
Visit LostGolfBalls.com and see the great prices on used golf balls

GolfBalls.com

A great gift to give to a golfer, is to purchase their favorite brand of golf balls, and personalize them. Golfers like to mark their balls because it allows them to distinguish their ball from their player partner's ball in addition to identifying the ball if lost in the woods or tall grass. What if you gave your valentine a gift of their favorite golf balls with their name printed on them? Tiger Woods has his own Nike Golf Balls with the name Tiger printed on each ball he uses. This is a great gift idea. Golfballs.com offers the largest selection of new, custom logo & personalized golf balls on the planet!
